Certificate and Diploma of Languages
Applications for Semester 1, 2009 are now open for all Certificate and Diploma in Languages courses.
There is no mid-year intake for any Certificate or Diploma in Languages courses.
Macquarie University offers a range of qualifications for the study of languages. Admission to these qualifications are only available via direct application to Macquarie University. All programs are available to study on a part-time basis only.
The on-time application closing date for all applications is Tuesday 30 September, 2008. However applications will be accepted by Friday 12 December, 2008 with a non-refundable late fee. Notification of result will be sent by mail on or about Wednesday 21 January 2009.
While most applications are successful, admission is not automatic. The Department of European Languages or the Department of International Studies will advise the Coursework Studies Section whether a place will be available for you.

- Certificate in Ancient Languages
- Diploma in Languages
- Diploma in Ancient Languages
If you have studied at University before, Macquarie University requires you to provide either an original official academic transcript, or a certified copy of the original with your application. If you do not provide this information, your application will not be considered. Documents can be certified at the Student Enquiry Service. You will need to bring with you the original document(s) and photocopies of the document(s).
If you have studied at Macquarie University previously, we will access your results directly.
Certificate in Languages - Add Program
Admission is open only to new or re-enrolling undergraduate degree students. Applications are now closed.
Certificate in Languages
Admission to the Certificate in Languages is open to all applicants. This program is a stand alone course.
Areas of study include:
- Asian Languages - Japanese (Limited places available, and not available by Distance)
- Asian Languages - Chinese (Not available by Distance)
- Asian Languages - Arabic (Not available by Distance)
- European Languages - Croatian
- European Languages - French
- European Languages - German
- European Languages - Italian
- European Languages - Macedonian
- European Languages - Modern Greek
- European Languages - Polish
- European Languages - Russian
- European Languages - Spanish
The Certificate in Languages requires the completion of 12 credit points.
The maximum Credit for Previous Studies for Macquarie non-award units or similar units at another tertiary institution where the units do not form part of a completed award is 6 credit points.
Candidates for the Certificate may transfer to the Diploma prior to satisfying the requirements for the Certificate after they have obtained 9 credit points with a GPA of 2.0. You must be enrolled in the Certificate of Languages to transfer to the Diploma of Languages.
Certificate in Ancient Languages
Admission to the Certificate in Ancient Languages is open to all applicants.
Areas of study include:
- Akkadian
- Ancient Greek
- Classical Hebrew
- Coptic
- Egyptian Hieroglyphs
- Latin
The Certificate in Ancient Languages requires the completion of 12 credit points.
The maximum Credit for Previous Studies for Macquarie non-award units or similar units at another tertiary institution where the units do not form part of a completed award is 6 credit points.
Candidates for the Certificate may transfer to the Diploma prior to satisfying the requirements for the Certificate after they have obtained 9 credit points with a GPA of 2.0. You must be enrolled in the Certificate of Ancient Languages to transfer to the Diploma of Ancient Languages.
Diploma in Languages
Admission to the Diploma in Languages is only open to applicants who:
- have a completed Bachelor Degree from an Australian university or
- have been offered a place within a Bachelor Degree from an Australian university or
- are currently enrolled in an Bachelor Degree from an Australian university.
If you are a current Macquarie Non-Award student who has successfully completed 12 credit points in the one language with overall GPA of 2.0 you are also eligible to apply.

The maximum Credit for Previous Studies for Macquarie non-award units or similar units at another tertiary institution where the units do not form part of a completed award is 12 credit points.
Candidates for the Diploma may transfer to the Bachelor of Arts prior to satisfying requirements for the Diploma after they have obtained 12 credit points with a GPA of 2.0.
Diploma in Ancient Languages
Admission to the Diploma in Ancient Languages is only open to applicants who:
- have a completed Bachelor Degree from an Australian university or
- have been offered a place within a Bachelor Degree from an Australian university or
- are currently enrolled in an Bachelor Degree from an Australian university.
If you are a current Macquarie Non-Award student who has successfully completed 12 credit points in the one language with overall GPA of 2.0 you are also eligible to apply.

The Diploma in Ancient Languages requires the completion of 24 credit points.

Candidates for the Diploma may transfer to the Bachelor of Arts prior to satisfying requirements for the Diploma after they have obtained 12 credit points with a GPA of 2.0.
