Honours Program & Length of Course
The Honours program, comprising coursework and thesis components, is determined by the Department and Division in which you are registering. You should be provided with information by your Department/Division of registration outlining the details of the honours program to be completed, the dates for submission of work required and the basis on which assessment is to be made. This program is represented on your Macquarie University Academic Record by an Honours unit describing the general field of study of your Honours work.
The field of study is usually the same as the name of the Department e.g. Modern History Honours or Biology Honours. The class of honours awarded will be shown against this unit describing the field of study in which the program was completed.
It is normally expected that students enrolled in an Honours program will not be undertaking any other studies at the same time. If a student does wish to undertake other studies concurrently, such as complete the final units of a Law degree, they must request permission in writing at the time of lodging the Honours application form. The Department and Division in which they have applied to take the Honours program will be asked to make a recommendation and the matter will be placed before the Coursework Studies Committee.
The Honours course is one year full time or two years part time or equivalent. You are encouraged to make effective use of the preceding vacation period in preliminary reading and, where practicable, in laboratory or field-work.
Any change to the above periods of candidature, including any change from full time to part time candidature or vice versa, must be approved by the Division in which you are registered. If you wish to change your attendance to part time after enrolling you must make a formal request in writing with supporting documentary evidence of your other commitments (work of at least 20-25 hrs per week, family duties etc.) to the Coursework Studies Section of the Academic Registrar’s Office. Changes from full time to part time must be made before the census date of the relevant half-year (the last working day in March or August).

Information About Qualifying For and Graduating With Your Bachelor Degree
- If you are a Macquarie University student expecting to complete the requirements for your Bachelor degree in 2009 and commence Honours in second semester 2009 you should have informed the University of your ‘expectation to complete’ by completing a form at the Student Enquiry Service.
- PLEASE NOTE: If you are not sure whether you have provided this information or think you may have given the wrong date, you must email apsinfo@mq.edu.au stating your full name, student ID number, degree, area of study and when you expect to complete the Bachelor Degree in which you are currently enrolled.
- Allow a minimum of 72 hours for this information to be processed and then check your estudent account under “My Results - When will you complete your degree”.
- Failure to inform “apsinfo” will result in delays in the qualification process and may affect your entry to the Honours program.
- Students who qualify for the award of a Bachelor degree in July 2009 will be allocated to a graduation ceremony in September 2009. You must graduate twice, first with the Bachelor degree and then with the Honours degree when it is completed. However if you do not wish to attend the ceremony for your Bachelor degree, you may elect to graduate in absentia.
- Students taking a double degree (such as BAppFinBEc or BCom-AcstBSc) must first qualify for the award of the double degree if they are applying for admission to honours unless they plan to exit the program i.e. qualify for one degree and abandon the other. You cannot interrupt a double degree to take an Honours program.
- Students taking combined Law degrees (such as BALLB or BComLLB) can interrupt the combined degree program to undertake an Honours course provided they have met the requirements for one of the non law degrees such as the BA or BCom and advised the University that they expect to qualify (see point 2 above). Students completing the BBA component of the BBALLB must check carefully that they have completed appropriate modules.
- For information about graduation refer to www.mq.edu.au/graduation. Further enquiries should be directed to the Graduation Unit at graduation@mq.edu.au or ph 9850 7354.
- Students who are completing a Bachelor degree at another university must provide an official transcript showing their final grades and eligibility to graduate as soon as possible.
