Mature Age/Non Current School Leaver Scholarship
Macquarie University recognises the financial needs of mature age students/non current school leavers who are interested in undertaking undergraduate study. The University is funding 5 scholarship valued at $3000 each for one year.
There are two parts to the application- an online application form and a compulsory personal statement (to be uploaded as part of the on line application form).
Our selection of scholarship candidates will be based on the assessment of the following:
Essential Selection Criteria:
- demonstrated financial need
- statement of your capacity to triumph over hardship: including financial disadvantage, sole parent or carer responsibilities, non- English speaking or Indigenous background, effects of trauma and/or abuse, long-term medical condition or disability or coming from a rural or remote area. These areas can be addressed as part of the compulsory personal statement.
- successful in obtaining an offer to Macquarie University in first semester 2010 through either UAC or a direct Macquarie admission scheme. Applicant cannot be studying the 2009 Year 12/HSC/International Baccalaureate, nor can they already hold a completed Bachelor or higher degree.
- intending to study full time internally. A full time waiver can be granted in instances where the applicant can demonstrate a need to study part time (carer responsibilities, long term medical condition, employment demands)
Desired Selection Criteria:
- established community leadership and involvement. These areas can be addressed as part of the compulsory personal statement.
Your personal statement should include information as follows:
Please supply a supporting statement (approximately 1-2 pages).
As this statement is a very important part of the selection process, you should give very careful consideration to your response. Please address the following issues:
- Describe your background, and reasons why you have not undertaken university studies in the past. Please provide information about your financial need for this scholarship.
- State your proposed area of study, reasons for selecting it and how you will combine the demands of university study with your other commitments.
- Give any information about your personal abilities, skills, achievements, experiences, and interests that you feel might be relevant to your application. Of particular interest is your involvement in community activities and your capacity to triumph over hardship.
Documents submitted as part of the application process will be verified at a later date.

As a general rule students are only able to hold one Scholarship at a time. This allows us to provide financial support to as many students as possible.
Macquarie University Merit Scholar Program and Scholarship
For: Macquarie University offers all domestic students with a UAI (equivalent ATAR) of 98.5 or above priority access to a host of opportunities such as advanced programs, internships and international studies subject to academic performance.
The University also invites students from this group to apply for a Macquarie University Merit Scholarship. These scholarships are highly competitive and non-deferrable.
These scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit. In addition the successful applicant should be able to display:
- Outstanding character
- Maturity
- Common Sense
- Capacity to triumph over hardship: including financial disadvantage, sole parent or carer responsibilities, non- English speaking or Indigenous background, effects of trauma and/or abuse, long-term medical condition or disability or coming from a rural or remote area.
*Please note that students who take a 'Gap' Year are also eligible to lodge an application.

$12,000 per year for up to 5 years

Macquarie Education Costs Scholarship (MECS)
For: Students who have been hampered by disadvantages beyond their control.
All successful applicants will be able to demonstrate financial hardship (applicants need to be in receipt of Youth Allowance or any other means tested Commonwealth support).
Students can supplement their application by providing details regarding the following areas:
- Capacity to triumph over hardship
- Indigenous background
- Carer responsibilities
- Geographic Disadvantage
- Non English speaking background
- Long term medical condition or
- On going effects of abuse
This equity based scholarship is designed to support recipients whose opportunities to study at university may have been hampered by situations out of their control.
These scholarships are available for any undergraduate course and you can apply at any stage of your course.
Value
$4508 per year for up to four years (value indexed each year). Students will have their ongoing eligibility assessed prior to each payment.

Macquarie Accommodation Scholarship (MAS)
For: This scholarship is designed to support recipients whose living situation may hamper their ability to study at Macquarie University and would benefit from relocation.
All successful applicants will be able to demonstrate financial hardship (applicants need to be in receipt of Youth Allowance or any other means tested Commonwealth support) and that they are relocating from a rural area to study at Macquarie University. Applicants who are relocating from another metropolitan area outside Sydney to another are eligible to apply.
Students can supplement their application by providing details regarding the following areas:
- Capacity to triumph over hardship
- Indigenous background
- Carer responsibilities
- Geographic Disadvantage
- Non English speaking background
- Long term medical condition or
- On going effects of abuse
Value
$9016 per annum for up to four years (value indexed each year). Students will have their ongoing eligibility assessed prior to each payment.

Macquarie Higher Study Scholarships (MAHS)
For: This scholarship is designed to enable recipients to continue their studies to an Honours level or postgraduate coursework program.
All successful students will be able to demonstrate financial hardship.
Students must be eligible to study at the Honours or postgraduate coursework level in a Commonwealth Supported place or tuition fee place (domestic students only).
Students can supplement their application by providing details regarding the following areas:
- Capacity to triumph over hardship
- Indigenous background
- Carer responsibilities
- Geographic Disadvantage
- Non English speaking background
- Long term medical condition or
- On going effects of abuse
Academic merit will also be considered.
Please note:
Priority will be given to students previously in receipt of a Macquarie or Commonwealth equity scholarship, although students coming from another university or not previously in receipt of a scholarship can also apply
Value
Up to $9016 per annum for the normal duration of your program*. A pro rata amount might be available for approved part-time study. A full-time waiver would be considered for students who demonstrate they cannot study full-time due to (for example), sole parent responsibilities, carer responsibilities, long-term medical condition/disability or on going effects of abuse.
*For example, a student studying an Honours degree can receive the scholarship for 1 year of full time study. A recipient's on going eligibility will be confirmed each semester prior to payment.

General Information
In most instances students cannot have more than one scholarship awarded to them. This is to provide financial assistance to as many students as possible.

Scholarship payments are made to students AFTER the Census date each semester. Correspondence will NOT be sent to those students who are not successful in gaining a scholarship.
